Plein air painter Kathryn Mapes Turner opens her show of new works, “Silent Poetry,” on Thursday, August 9th, at Trio Fine Art. An artist’s reception takes place 5-8:00 pm, and Turner plans on leading a “Conversation on Creativity, as it Relates to the Landscape.” All are welcome to attend! A native Wyomingite, Turner is one of Jackson’s artists deeply immersing herself in the landscapes surrounding the Tetons. That’s even truer lately, as the artist has just come off two months of preparing and taking part in the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters (RMPAP) National Paint Out in Grand Teton National Park (GTNP). Who knows how many new paintings Turner created? Surely, the experience will influence this new show of works. For her efforts, her eye and her talent, Turner won RMPAP’s top honor, “Best in Show.” She’s rackin’ up those blue ribbons!

“This exhibition,” says Turner, “is comprised of powerful, yet sensitively rendered landscapes and communicate my life-long relationship with this grand scenery.” Her work, she adds, is intensely connected to her life growing up as a member of the fourth-generation ranching family, smack in the middle of GTNP. Turner interprets mountain vistas, streams and sky in her ever-increasingly distinctive style; her paintings have evolved to often be very “light” in weight—meaning her paints are thinned, exposing her painting surface, creating interesting texture and shadows. The style reflects a certain “lightness of being,” a gentle vision of the natural world. Her work has been featured in national exhibitions such as Birds in Art at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum and Western Visions at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Jackson Hole designer and artist Abbie Miller will present Terra: Textile, a “multi-dimensional fashion event,” on Friday, August 17, at 6:30 p.m. at The Center for the Arts. The show opens Teton Art Lab’s two-day Caldera Festival. Tickets are $20, available at Shades Café, Valley Bookstore, Teton Artlab, and The Center Box Office.

“The relationship between clothing and landscape can go many directions,” Miller said. “It could be clothing as shelter from landscape, clothing as camouflage or a social standard within landscape, and clothing responding to the environmental state or aesthetic of the landscape. Each designer addressed these concepts by designing clothing subtly or boldly.”

Miller asked clothing designers Lizz Basinger, Ashley Ernest, Orwell Ashelter and AM Renegade to create a line that speaks to the relationship between clothing and landscape. From the National Museum of Wildlife Art: “Visitors to the National Museum of Wildlife Art will be “Running Wild” on August 9 from 7-10 p.m., during its monthly Mix’d Media event. The final Mix’d Media of the season is free, outdoors on the museum’s sculpture trail. The event will resume indoors in November.”

August’s Mix’d Media theme refers to video artist Sam Easterson’s “Running Wild” video installation – Easterson will be on hand for some creative interaction with guests. Interaction like a motion-activated camera trap that takes visitors’ pictures when they trip the camera’s motion sensor —- and a wireless micro video camera and borescope hooked to live monitors with a variety of natural materials for guests to attach for inspection.

What is a borescope??????? We will find out!  The unveiling of a major sculpture trail work, Wyoming sculptor Sandy Scott’s “Moose Flats,” will take place. Enjoy “Wild Game Chili,” a “Wild (Grey) Goose Chase” drink special, and live music by indie/pop band Elk Attack. www.wildlifeart.org
