Culture Front’s final live event of the season features Jackson’s Hole Dance Films performing artists, delving into “Live Process,” says Culture Front director and moderator Meg Daly. This season-ending event takes place Thursday, October 25, 5:30-7 p.m. at The Rose cocktail lounge. The event is free and open to the public; you must be at or over the age of 21 to attend….this IS a bar, folks!

There’s no Jackson artist getting more media exposure right now than Kathryn Mapes Turner. “Live Process” will take the evening’s audience behind the scenes of the making of a dance film, a project about Turner’s family history, and her legacy as the sole woman in a big ranching family—ultimately, it’s about her connection to place. Phrasing, setting, theme and story create cohesive films–this film has dance at its core. Audience members will have the opportunity to observe a current work-in-progress and offer feedback.

Hole Dance Films specializes in dance film and is a non-profit program of Dancers’ Workshop, artistically directed by Carrie Richer and Kate W. Kosharek.

“This is a different project for us,” Kosharek said. “In the past we have started with a simple concept or abstract idea. With this project we have a more complex approach because it is a documentary of someone’s life.”

Culture Front is arguably this year’s freshest, most appealing addition to Jackson Hole’s contemporary art scene. If we were giving out “Fresh Art Attitude” awards, Meg Daly deserves the first statuette!

“It’s exciting to see the response and engagement around the community,” says Daly. “It proves there’s a critical mass in Jackson wanting to talk about art. It’s all been an experiment, and the presenters have really enjoyed sharing their work and passions—it’s about the spoken voice. The gatherings are a form of art in themselves, mini events growing organically—something different from traditional art shows hung on gallery walls. I let the artists lead the way, and I’ve been open to what they have wanted to do.”

The Art Association’s Tom Woodhouse sends bunches of emails about live model drawing classes. As winter draws near, those classes seem to be the hot ticket!  A recent, slightly edited, email from Tom says:

“It is getting cold, so it is time to think about how to spend those dark evenings through the off season. We have no off season here at the Art Association, so get our NEW class catalogue, and get yourself and your friends signed up!  Fred (Kingwill) has (as of last week) some room left for ‘Beginning Watercolor’ on Mondays, 6 to 9 pm. We are offering ‘Drawing’ every Tuesday night until Christmas. Sign up for one, or come to all of them. You will improve much more if you attend all classes. 

“Life Drawing” has been excellent the last several weeks. Great models and solid participation from both regulars and new additions. Our life drawers liked Deigo Mendoza’s figure presentation so much, they asked me to put together a two- day workshop for the 27th and 28th of October. The workshop meets 11am – 4pm each day.
