Clay Sculpting

Clay sculpting is an art in which artists create objects by shaping clay. Sculpting is one of the oldest art forms ever known to humankind, probably existing since the evolution of humankind. Sculpting lets the artist create three-dimensional objects through their artwork and hence, is still considered as one of the best art forms ever.

Before we get to understand how to make a sculpture out of clay, let’s look at the different types of clays used in clay sculpture:

  1. Oil-based clay
This clay will appear unrefined and prove tricky to use for detailed work; however, the clay retains its softness. This feature makes it easy to work with and hence, is widely used to train beginners.
  2. Polymer-based clay
This clay is as soft as the oil-based clay; however, it is prone to cracking. Polymer-based clay can be baked in an oven at your household to create a structure.
  3. Ceramic clay
Ceramic clay is a water-based clay that can be fired at 250 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures for it to stay firm.

All clays can be used for creating a sculpture. Different artists use different clay types depending on their interest in the touch and feel of the clay.

Steps to make a clay sculpture

  1. Supplies
It is vital to have the right set of sculpting tools to create and add details to your sculpture. Though specific tools may not be necessary, having the basic tools would be a requirement.
  2. Vision
It is essential to have the final vision in mind even before you actually start the sculpting process. It is not possible to create a sculpture without an idea of how you want the final result to turn out to be.  Sketches with imagined viewpoints and dimensions will come in handy while sculpting.
  3. Dried clay
It is essential to ensure that the clay is not dried out before the start. It is ideal for rolling the amount of clay you’re working with your hand to form a cylinder and bend the cylinder. The clay should be workable if it bends smoothly; it is ideal for adding more water and moistening the clay if it breaks during this test.
  4. Beware of protruding shapes
While working on clay sculpture, it is ideal for sticking to contained shapes. You may have seen sculptors with extensions; however, the chances are that they have objects inside the sculpture that support the structure from the weight of the clay.
  5. Be on the lookout for learning opportunities
While sculpting could be local art, some skills can be picked up by attending study courses too. Many studios conduct sessions for budding artists to help them learn the craft. Interested artists may contact any of these classes for assistance and improve their skills.

One such event is the “Succulent Planters on the Wheel” conducted on Jun 29th. This class will help beginners learn the basics of working on the pottery wheel. This event will let parents and children work together on the sculpture. Such sessions work both as a learning and family bonding opportunity for budding artists.
